Check out our latest infographic on what cities are known for their hobbies and interests. Find out which city shares your interest and why.

Aficionados: What U.S. Cities Know Best

Today, there’s a niche group for everything—and probably an enthusiast magazine to fill hobbyists in on the latest development in their obscure interest group. But that doesn’t quite satisfy the enthusiasts desire to be an ambassador—to search out a friend who shares their refined pallet. With the vast but connected world of the interest fellow aficionados are never far off—but what able people who aren’t on your computer screen? What if your neighbor also secretly collects Leave it to Beaver memorabilia and longs for a kindred spirit to share it with?

Luckily, meeting people with shared interests just got a lot easier, with hicup!

There are a few common interests that can full of nuance to the seasoned professional—unfortunately they’re not common enough to always have a friend to talk about it with.  Just imagine–the oenophilist has longed to discuss the intricacies of a fine wine with someone other than her Labrador. When she asks at a party, “Oh have your tried this Pinot from the Burgundy region?” she longs to hear her new friend say, “Yes! And weren’t the tannins too strong?” And they will weep together, tears of joy and understanding, right there in the middle of Del av deres attraksjon er det store antallet av online casino spilleautomater med god kvalitet som er tilgjengelig a spille. the ballroom. This of course, is a day dream, but what if that dream could become a reality?

Likewise, the classic car enthusiast has tinkered endlessly on his vintage Citroën DS, buffing a perfect sheen into the carefully lacquered finish. His friends think it looks “neat,” his kids think it looks “old,” he wants only to meet someone who will think the baby gleaming in the garage under a protective tarp “Deserves it’s title as the most beautiful car of all time!” That it is a “magnificent achievement in the world of engineering! And is most definitely a site to see.” Sure he goes to the car shows and enjoys meeting the folk as they crowd around his prized possession, but he sure wishes he didn’t always have to drive from Texas to Kentucky.

The foodie’s no different. Her pallet ranges from arugula to snails. Her family is relieved that at least she can enjoy a good steak, but they just don’t understand when she insists that bacon-infused whiskey is divine. At her favorite up-scale café she savors every bite, but wishes someone other than the chef could appreciate the way the ginger lime glaze contrasts with the Hawaiian sea salt on the brussels sprouts. She knows a lot of people who love a good meal, but she’s looking for something more.

The museum of modern art is a lonely place indeed, especially when the extent of the art connoisseur’s partner’s vocabulary on art critique is “That’s … interesting.” He longs to hear the rise and fall of inflection as a passionate art critic analyzes the colors in a Matisse, and the lines of a Chagall. It doesn’t help that he lives in rural Ohio. But he’s been telling himself he can’t be the only person in Loudonville who identifies with Van Gogh.

The cigar aficionado knows a good cigar when she smells one, and wishes she knew someone else who did. As much as she wishes for the finest hand-rolled Cuban cigar, she longs for someone to share the joy of this luxurious treat with, someone who won’t send her to the garage so she won’t stink up the house. She blows a white puff into the crisp air and wishes someone would complement her smoke ring.

Like the rest, the film buff has been pursuing his interests alone. Sitting in his dark cave—in optimal viewing conditions—he invents conversations in which he wows a friend with his discussion of the finer details of Hitchcock’s Citizen Cane. All he wants is for someone to respond and tell him something he doesn’t already know.

Don’t be glum, aficionados! Just use your smartphone to log onto hicup and meet people with similar interests in your area!

Happy St. Patty”s Day to hicup folks in Chicago! Wish we were there!

CHICAGO ST. PATRICK’S DAY CELEBRATION: Emerald River

Green River Chicago

Only in Chicago!

This Saturday, the city of Chicago will continue its 50-year tradition of dyeing the Chicago River green to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. Best viewing spots for the general public are:

·         East side of the Michigan Avenue Bridge

·         West side of the Columbus Drive Bridge

·         Upper & lower Wacker Drive between Michigan Avenue and Columbus Avenue

Plan on arriving by 10:00 a.m. on Saturday morning. You can also reserve seating at some restaurants such as Trump International Hotel & Tower (which is re-introducing its St. Patriack’s Day Skyboxes on the 17th floor; or Rebar, the hotel’s mezzanine lobby that overlooks the Chicago River).

The story of dyeing the river, according to ChicagoNow blogger Carole Kuhrt Brewer, goes like this:

It all started back in 1961 when Stephen Bailey, Business Manager of the Chicago Journeymen Plumbers Local Union #110, was discussing plans with a colleague for the 1962 St. Patrick’s Day Parade. During the meeting, Bailey was approached by a plumber who was wearing coveralls that were originally white but had been stained the perfect shade of Irish green by the dye used to detect leadks in the Chicago River. Immediately, Bailey asked why couldn’t this dye be used to turn the river green for St. Patrick’s Day. After some testing and research. . . the tradition was born.

The first year, 1962, 100 pounds of dye was used to keep the river green for a week. The second year, the amount was cut to 50 pounds and the river stayed green for three days. The next year the dye was reduced to 25 pounds which kept the river green for a online pokies day.

In 1966, when environmentalists threated to end the tradition by claiming that the oil-based dye was ruining the river, the committee went back to the drawing board. After experimenting with a number of vegetable dyes, they put together today’s formula that uses 40 pounds of environmentally-friendly dye to keep the river green for four or five hours.

Carrie Fisher

Tuesday, March 13, 7:00 p.m.

CELEB READING/SIGNING  AT HOLLYWOOD’S COOLEST BOOKSTORE

CARRIE FISHER discusses and signs her latest book, Shockaholic, at BOOK SOUP/HOLLYWOOD

Bad news. . . for anyone who thought Carrie Fischer had finally stopped talking about herself. . .she has yet another brand-new problem to overshare about. This time, the electro-convulsive shock therapy she’s been regularly undergoing is threatening to wipe out (what’s left of) her memory.

But get ready for a shock of your own. Not only doesn’t she mind paying the electric bill, she loves the high-voltage treatments. In fact, she can’t get enough; this might be a brand-new addiction for her. But before she can truly commit herself to it in the long term, she’d better get some of those more nagging memories on paper.

It’s been a roller coaster of a few years for Carrie since her Tony- and Emmy-nominated, Caesars has become apparently searching to change certainly one of its four AC best casino online qualities. one-woman Broadway show and New York Times bestselling book Wishful Drinking. She not only lost her beloved father, but also her once-upon-a-very-brief-time stepmother, Elizabeth Taylor. And if that weren’t enough, she also lost over 40 pounds of unwanted flesh – not by sawing off a leg (though that did cross her zapped mind) but by doing what might be termed “wishful shrinking,” all the while staying sober and sane-ish. And she wants to tell you, dear reader, all about it. . . and more.

Yes, of course, Shockaholic is laugh-out-loud funny, acerbic and witty as hell. But it also reveals a new side of Carrie Fisher that may even bring a pleasant shock your way: it is contemplative, vulnerable, and ultimately quite tender.
